The Technical Challenge: Faster Cure Without Film Defects
Coil, can, automotive and general industrial coatings must deliver line-speed productivity alongside hardness, appearance and durability. A high-solids crosslinker can change viscosity, flow, cure response or compatibility. The practical question is which HMMM grade supports the required processing profile without creating an unacceptable compromise elsewhere.
The Molecular Edge: Why HMMM Chemistry Matters
HMMM is a methylated melamine crosslinker. Its melamine core provides multiple potential reaction sites, while methylol-ether functionality can react with suitable hydroxyl-, carboxyl- or amide-functional binders under an appropriately designed acid-catalysed bake. Etherification level, imino content, non-volatile content, viscosity, catalyst selection and bake schedule all influence the useful cure window.
Application Matrix
| Grade | Catalog profile | Typical application starting point |
|---|---|---|
| SHREEBOND HM-301 | >98% non-volatile; 1,400–4,300 cPs | Waterborne, can and coil coatings |
| SHREEBOND HM-303 LF | Low-formaldehyde methylated melamine; >98% non-volatile | Coil, can, automotive and waterborne coatings |
| SHREEBOND HM-323 | High-imino methylated melamine; 80 ±2% non-volatile | Low-bake, mirror-backing and industrial coatings |
| SHREEBOND HM-325 | High-imino methylated melamine; 80 ±2% non-volatile | Automotive, coil and container coatings |
| SHREEBOND HM-327 | High-imino methylated melamine; 90 ±2% non-volatile | Automotive, coil, metal decorating and waterborne coatings |
| SHREEBOND HM-370 | Partially methylated melamine; 88 ±2% non-volatile | Primer and water-based coatings |
Procurement and Compliance Checklist
- Request the current TDS, SDS, certificate of analysis and lot-specific non-volatile/viscosity data before approving a grade.
- Store sealed material under the supplier-recommended conditions and re-check viscosity and appearance before use after extended storage.
- Validate addition order, catalyst level, compatibility and pot life on the actual binder package.
- Treat low-free-formaldehyde grades as a formulation input, not a finished-coating compliance claim.
- Approve line trials using the real substrate, film build, oven profile and cure test methods.
